Apple Unveils Podcast Subscriptions and Redesigned Apple Podcasts App

In a move to rival Spotify, Apple has announced the expansion of its podcast service into subscription-based model. This new feature, aptly named Apple Podcasts Subscriptions, will allow listeners to access exclusive benefits like ad-free listening, early access to episodes, and support for favorite creators.

The Service Details

The service is set to launch in May, with availability in over 170 countries and regions worldwide. Initially, the first premium subscriptions will come from both independent voices and premier studios, including notable names such as:

  • Tenderfoot TV
  • Pushkin Industries
  • Radiotopia from PRX
  • QCODE

Additionally, larger brands like NPR, The Los Angeles Times, The Athletic, Spotify, and many others will be part of the launch lineup.

Pricing and Revenue Model

Pricing for subscriptions starts at around $0.49 per month in the U.S., with creators able to set their own pricing. Apple takes a 30% cut of revenue in year one, dropping its share to 15% in year two, just like it does for streaming services and other subscription products.

Key Features

  • Open Marketplace: Creators can choose whether a subscription offers ad-free listening, bonus episodes, access to archival content, or anything else.
  • Show Pricing: Shows can be fully free, paid, or ‘freemium’ where there’s a mix of free content anyone can access, with the ability to upgrade to a paid subscription.
  • No Exclusivity: Podcasters can distribute their shows anywhere, they don’t have to be exclusive to Apple Podcasts.
  • Ad Revenue: Creators keep 100% of ad revenue.
